"Fallen" is part of a series of works that repurpose historic monuments, which no longer represent universal social freedoms, to serve as historical artifacts, reminding us of a dark history that must not be repeated. The Fallen Bench depicts the toppled statue of General Robert E. Lee, a prominent figure in the pro-slavery Confederacy during the 1861-1865 Civil War. Numerous statues of Robert E. Lee were vandalized and removed during public protests against symbols of oppression that threatened social liberties.
This sculpture was created through a combination of 3D scanning of existing Civil War statues and contemporary digital sculpting and fabrication techniques.
