END TO END BURNERS is a floor to ceiling installation consisting of 1,5000 handmade shivs. Manganni considers the individual shivs as bodies within a carceral tier structure to aid in mapping the realities of incarceration for the viewers. The construction of an opulent light fixture is an act of subversion, from a distance one might assume it is a traditional chandelier. The piece serves as a reflection of hierarchies and systems of violence. Addressing the oppressive realities of the for-profit system of incarceration is clear, but Manganni’s work is also meditative. The repetitious dangling “crystal shivs” create a kind of rhythm to the piece, a call back to the day-to-day tedium of incarceration while simultaneously celebrating routine and creativity in a post carceral experience.
